Sophie Kornacki, lifelong resident of Wyandotte, Michigan, passed away peacefully at the age of 96. Born in Wyandotte, she was the youngest child of Marianna and George Sacilowski.

Sophie is survived by her daughters, Margaret Cappaert of Wyandotte and Christine Brockman (William) of Hilton Head, SC; grandsons Thomas Cappaert of Carmel, IN and Michael (Kelly) Cappaert of Flat Rock, MI; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Sophie was predeceased in death by her husband Stanley, daughter Connie, and seven brothers and sisters.

With an incredible talent for sewing, Sophie worked as a seamstress while raising her daughters. She was active in her church and many other organizations. She was an avid reader, loved to play cards and bunko, crocheted baby blankets to donate, and always found creative solutions to any obstacles that came her way. She will forever be remembered for her gift of gab and her kind and generous heart.

After raising her family, Sophie returned to school to be a medical secretary, and began her career in her fifties at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, where she worked on the 5th floor until she was seventy. After retirement she served as the chair of surgical lounge volunteers where she worked into her nineties. She was often called upon to be an interpreter for Polish speaking patients and received awards for her services, most notably recognition for her compassionate work in a program called No One Dies Alone.

The hospital was her refuge, and she adored and respected the doctors, nurses, staff, and patients. She often talked of wishing she had become a nurse. With that in mind, the family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to a scholarship fund to support the education of future nurses and the continuing education of HFHS nurses:

To sum it up, Sophie brought laughter to our hearts!!

A private burial will take place Thursday, October 15th. Due to the pandemic, a memorial service and celebration of Sophie's life will be held at a later date.
