Union County Courier, Elk Point, SD, 2 Dec 1909, page 1:
"Daniel P. Walker, who has been rather feeble for some time, took to his bed a week ago Saturday and died Wednesday night, Nov. 24, of pneumonia. Few people except his nearest neighbors knew of his illness until his death was announced.

Mr. Walker was born in Washington county, Indiana in 1834. When 12 years old he moved with his parents to Illinois and later moved to Iowa. Here in 1858 he was united in marriage to Miss Mariah Gray, who survives him, with six of the eight children that were born to them. In 1863 he enlisted in the 26th Indiana regiment and served his country faithfully until the end of the war. Soon after being mustered out, in 1865, he came to Union county with his family and took a homestead a mile and a half west of Jefferson. For the forty-four years since his home has been continuously in this county.

Besides his wife he leaves at death the following six children: Ed. Walker of this city; Mrs. Viola Martin of Oklahoma; Mrs. Bert Godfrey of Sioux City; Mrs. Frank Chapin of Garland; Mrs. Cora Brink of Washington and Mrs. John Livingston of this city,. The funeral was attended at the Baptist church on Thanksgiving Day, the pastor, Rev. Geo. W. Bird, conducting the service. Interment was in the Elk Point cemetery."
