Joseph Lafayette Allen Jr was born on July 25, 1896 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of Joseph Layfette Allen (1855–1919) and Sarah Ann "Sally" (Lovell) Allen (1873–1935).

He was married to Nola Ann Williams (1898–1975), the daughter of Marion Lunford Williams (1876–1914) and Mary Melissa (Loring) Williams (1879–1945).

Joseph was a member of the First Nazarene Church and worked in the Tennessee Automobile Title Department of the Tax Division. Living at 341 Marshall Street in rural Nashville, he was 64 years old, married and had Rheumatic heart disease when he died of aortic stenosis at Vanderbilt University Hospital on May 24, 1961.

Survivors included his wife Nola, daughters Mrs Leonard L Coats and Mrs Oscar Anderson, son Joe D Allen, sisters Mrs Louise Davis and Mrs Leona Christman, brother Bill Allen and nine grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on May 26th at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, and burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville.
