“Hugh Bale
A memorial service for Hugh Bale, retired chief of The Sacramento Bee’s copy desk and editor of Silver Times, a quarterly supplement in the Auburn Journal, will be held May 1 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Hills Mortuary in Auburn.
He died Sunday at his Newcastle home at age 69.
Mr. Bale worked 29 years on The Bee’s copy editing desk until retiring in April 1984.
As editor of the Silver Times, he was preparing its fourth issue at the time of his death and was to receive the media advocate award for 1989 from the California Commission on Aging on May 2 for his work on the publication.
Mr. Bale is survived by his wife of 38 years, Helen; son, James A. Bale of Pleasant Hill; daughters Lila B. Levinson of Los Altos Hills and Michelle B. DuBois of Boxborough, Mass.: a brother, Clarence Bale of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Gertrude E. Bale of Bowling Green, Ky.; and eight grandchildren.
He donated his remains to the University Medical Center in Sacramento.
The family requests that any remembrances be made to the American Cancer Society or the Newcastle Fire Department.”
