J. R. Boyce, jr., whose death was announced by the Inter Mountain yesterday, was one of Butte's valued citizens. He was born in Missouri April 20, 1844, where he was reared and educated. In 1865 he came west with his mother and the rest of his family to join his father, Hon. J. R. Boyce, who had arrived in Alder gulch the year before. Later he removed to Helena, where he remained until 1875 and in 1879 the firm of Sands & Boyce was established in this city. In 1887 the firm was changed to J. R. Boyce, Jr. & Co., Mr. Boyce's partner being the late Judge A. J. Davis. In 1891 the firm was dissolved. Since that date and until about two years ago, Mr. Boyce spent most of his time at the Lynndal ranch, nine miles south of the city. Mr. Boyce was married April 26, 1870, to Miss Bessie Fant. Mrs. Boyce died at the age of 33, leaving four children, Lynn F., Wilbur, Thomas and Bessie. Wilbur, who was a member of Captain Stiver's company of rough riders, died a year ago. In March, 1881, Mr. Boyce married Miss Lynnie Fant, a sister of his first wife. The results of that union are two children, Owen and Alvin, who are both living.
