He married his second wife, Avis, a nurse, in 1954. They divorced in 1977 after she moved to Arizona. He was very close to his stepdaughter, Karen Norman. He liked to smoke cigars and lived in an apartment in Dallas well into old age before he got to where he couldn't live alone and Karen moved him into her home. He was later moved to a nursing home in Fort Worth.
