Alice C. Arnot, 93, homemaker, volunteer

Alice C. Arnot, a homemaker and volunteer, died Saturday at St. Joseph Medical Center of complications from a fall. The longtime Roland Park resident was 93.
Born Alice C. Bowie, she was raised at Fairview, near Bowie, where her family has lived since 1798. She was a granddaughter of Oden Bowie, who served as Maryland's governor from 1869 to 1872 and later was president of the Maryland Jockey Club and founder of the Preakness Stakes.
A graduate of Miss Eastman's School in Washington, she made her debut in 1928 at the Bachelors Cotillon. During the early 1930s, she worked as a secretary and clerk at the U.S. Customs House in Baltimore.
While living at a Lanvale Street rooming house on Bolton Hill, she met her future husband, Nathaniel duBois Arnot, also a boarder there. They were married in 1938 and for many years lived on Somerset Road.
Mr. Arnot, president of Arnot Marine Corp. in New York City, the largest ship outfitter in the nation, died in 1971.
Mrs. Arnot was a volunteer and regent for Kenmore Association Inc., which manages Kenmore, the Fredericksburg, Va., home of George Washington's sister, Betty Lewis. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames of America.
She was an avid gardener and member of the Rosalyn Garden Club and the Mount Vernon Club. She was a former president of the Heart Association of Maryland.
Mrs. Arnot was a longtime communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, where a memorial service was held Tuesday.
Surviving are two sons, Nathaniel D. Arnot Jr. of Baltimore and Oden Bowie Arnot of Riderwood; a daughter, Mary Eugenia Arnot Lord Flinn of Rumson, N.J.; a brother, Oden Bowie of Bowie, former secretary of the state Senate; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Alice Carter Arnot Moore, died in 1973.
