Dr. William Mitchell Mikkelsen passed away peacefully at his home on January 16, 2018, at the age of 94, following a period of declining health.

He was born May 25, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to William Byford Mikkelsen and Imogene Yager Mikkelsen. He married Joan Electra Ostrander on August 7, 1948.

William began his college education at the University of Minnesota in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. As a participant in the Army Specialized Training Program he attended Engineering School at South Dakota State College, Brookings, from 1943 to 1944, and took Pre-Med courses at the University of Wisconsin in 1944. He attended the University of Michigan Medical School from 1945 to his graduation in 1949.

Dr. Mikkelsen interned at the Albany Hospital in Albany, NY from 1949 to 1950, and had a residency in Internal Medicine at the Newington Veterans Administration Hospital in Connecticut in 1950. He served in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1951 to 1953 in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Mikkelsen also had a clinical residency and traineeship in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, in 1953.

Dr. Mikkelsen joined the staff of the University of Michigan Medical School in 1954, and retired as a Professor of Internal Medicine there in 1989. Dr. Mikkelsen was on the staff of the Rackham Arthritis Research Unit and the University of Michigan Geriatric Division after it was formed by Dr. Ivan F. Duff. Dr. Mikkelsen's research involved a number of drug trials of rheumatic disease medications and responsibility for the rheumatic disease components of the Tecumseh Community Health Study, especially gout, uric acid metabolism, and osteoarthritis.

Dr. Mikkelsen served as a member of the University of Michigan's Periodic Health Appraisal Unit, eventually as its director from 1966 to 1988. He was on the editorial board of Arthritis and Rheumatism from 1967 to 1981, eventually serving as chief editor.

Dr. Mikkelsen is survived by his son William Mikkelsen (Kim); his daughters Susan Rees, Molly Jensen, and Anne Chappuis; his daughter-in-law Gladys Leary-Mikkelsen; and by his grandchildren Ian Mikkelsen, Katherine Jensen, Warren Chappuis, and Hayley Mikkelsen. Dr. Mikkelsen was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Joan Mikkelsen, on October 2, 2017, and previously by their children Peter, Elizabeth (Vlisides), and John.

Following his retirement in 1989, William enjoyed reading, listening to music, traveling, gardening, crossword puzzles, and running, occasionally placing among participants in his age group. He also enjoyed spending Michigan's worst winter months in Florida, where he made many dear friends. Bill greatly enjoyed family vacations with his children, especially a trip to Puerto Rico and later to Paris, France. Bill enjoyed cheering for the Wolverines. He had wide areas of interest in the sciences and the arts, including a wide range of musical tastes that he enthusiastically enjoyed sharing with friends and family. Bill was soft spoken, concise, and had a quick, dry sense of humor. He was able to see the funny side of life, even during challenging times. Bill had a practical approach to life and he completed tasks meticulously. He was very generous, and was a strong support to his family throughout his life.
