Sarah Eleanor Adams Barnes was the daughter of Isaac Mitchel Adams (1775-1849) and his wife, Leah Wood (1777-1860). Isaac Mitchel Adams was a patriot of the War of 1812. There are sources that identify Sarah as Sarah Eleanor Quinton Adams (i.e. the 1850 US Census lists her as Sarah E. Q. Barnes). Her great grandmother was named Sarah Quinton (1716-1767). The middle name Quinton has not been used is this memorial until more definitive research is completed.

Sarah married James Atkinson Barnes on 12 March 1833 in Somerset County, Maryland and they resided in Pocomoke City for most of their lives. No known burial location has been discovered as yet.
