Eric Keith Barnum passed away at home on January 6, 2018. He was born to Walter and Joyce Barnum on September 18, 1949, in Seattle. Eric graduated from Shorecrest High School in 1967. That fall, as a talented and energetic young man, Eric entered the University of Washington. While pursuing a degree in education Eric enjoyed participating in the Marching Band and the Debate Team. His love for the Huskies continued by being an active Tyee member and season ticket holder for football and the men's basketball teams. He loved to wear his purple and gold. Eric joined the Northshore School District in the fall of 1971. He served in several roles during his 37-year tenure with the district - teacher, coach, assistant principal, Director of Student Services, and Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, the position he held when he retired in 2008. Eric was a mentor and a friend to countless people in the Northshore community.
Eric spent many fun-filled summers and weekends at the Grace and Ray Rader (Grandparents) Lake Tapps house, later to be the Barnum house on the lake. The lake time allowed extended relatives to share BBQ picnics and games with the Rowe family and Sugamele family and to grow up together and be kids. Eric developed many skills and talents at the lake including water skiing, king of the raft, model hydroplane boats, Jigsaw puzzles, Pinochle, berry picking, 4th of July fireworks; a kids paradise. Eric invited many friends up to the lake for picnics and to share the lake experience he loved. Ever prominent was the beautiful view of Mt. Rainier from the dock.
Eric had many interests; golfing, playing bridge, reading, shopping, gardening, doing pilates, entertaining friends, attending the theatre, and the symphony. Music was integral to Eric's life as he was born into a musical family; played the clarinet, was a high school drum major, enjoyed being a DJ (Celebrations), and always loved a good concert. Giving back to the community was also a priority, and he was involved with The Northshore Kiwanis, Scholarship Foundation of Northshore, and The Evergreen Health Foundation. Eric was exceptionally generous to many people and organizations. Eric's greatest passion was to always be an amazing and loving husband to the love of his life and soul mate Sally. Together they enjoyed their 26 years together to the fullest.
Eric is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Mitchell Barnum; and his sisters Dana Hadfield (Joel) and Gail; his sister-in-law Anne Mitchell; his aunts, La Verne Sugamele (Jerry) and Phyllis Rowe. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews will also miss Eric as well as his special dog buddy, Dan.
Our lives have been touched and enriched by the result of Eric's presence. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His memory will remain with us forever.
