Grandson of Kamehameha I, through his mother Elizabeth Kinaʻu. Educated at the Royal School in Honolulu, at the age of ten he was placed in line for the governorship of Kauai. However, he was a problem student and was expelled from the school, and forced to relinquish his property until he came of age. There is some evidence he raised a militia and may have planned to overthrow the Kingdom government. He was betrothed to Tahitian Princess Ninito Teraʻiapo, but died of measles before they met.
