The son of Melchior & Sarah (Engle) Ditzler and stepson of Mary Catherine (Ulrich) Ditzler, in 1850 he was living with and/or working for Andrew Matthews in Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, but in 1860 was a farm laborer living with and/or working for farmer John Boyer in Clay Township, Lancaster County.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of nineteen in Lancaster August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. I, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the correctly stated age of nineteen in Lancaster January 12, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia January 15 as a private with Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He was promoted to artificer March 13, 1865, and honorably discharged with the battery June 23, 1865, at Philadelphia.

He married Mary Catharine Shay and fathered the children you see linked below. He died at his son Charles' home from a "gastric carcinoma."
