JAMES CHAPMAN DEAD.

After a Long Career as a Lawyer He Dies Suddenly.

The death of James Chapman, one of the oldest lawyers in this county, took place early this morning at his home in Greenville. Mr. Chapman was born in New Germantown, Hunterdon county, where for twenty years his father taught school. After receiving a common school education James Chapman entered a law office, and in 1846 he was admitted to the bar as an attorney-at-law. In 1849 he became a counsellor and soon afterward he went to Illinois to practice. He remained there but a few years, and then came to this city where he practiced his profession ever since. Some years ago he was elected a justice of the peace, and held that office several terms. He was married, but for some years was estranged from his family. The deceased became ill several days ago and rapidly grew worse. Yesterday it was believed he could not survive the night.
