A native of Gaston County, he was the retired owner/operator of Black's Grill, along with his late wife, Mallie, which they operated for over 60 years. He was a member of the non-denominational Christian Fellowship.
Survivors include a son, David Dow Black III of Baldwin, Ga.; two daughters, Helen McGinnis and Barbara Hastings, both of Cherryville; five grandchildren, Sabrina Bowyer, Kevin Hastings, Kim Peeler, Heidi Black and Abi Black; and a sister, Geneva "Toots" Davis.

David Dow Black Jr., 85, of Cherryville, N.C., died Monday at a private care facility.
A native of Gaston County, N.C., he was the son of the late David Dow Sr. and Odie Mae Pendleton Black. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He owned and operated Black's Grill and belonged to the nondenominational Christian Fellowship. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mallie Smith Black; two brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include his son, Dr. David Dow Black III, Baldwin; daughters, Helen McGinnis, Cherryville, N.C., and Barbara Hastings, Cherryville, N.C.; sister, Geneva Davis, Cherryville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
