MSgt. US Army ~ Korea, Vietnam
November 12, 1929 - October 24, 2020
James "Jim" Edward Ward, of Elk Grove, California, beloved husband, father, and Papaw, drew his last breath on October 24, 2020, after a brief illness.
Born on November 12, 1929, he was a man who loved his family deeply. He was born in Leflore County and raised in Wilburton, Oklahoma. He graduated from Wilburton High School in 1947, having only missed one day of school. He attended a local college (pre-dentistry) but after six months he left school to join the Army. While in the service, he met the love of his life and, after two short months of courtship, they were wed. On September 15th, 2020, they celebrated 64 years of wedded bliss. He proudly served in the military for over 22 years.
After retiring from the Army, he relocated his family to Elverta, California, where they lived on a small ranchette. Because of his desire to help his community, he became a volunteer firefighter for the Rio Linda/Elverta Fire District. He started raising cattle and needed more land, so, after five years, they once again moved, this time to Elk Grove, California, where he raised beefalo cattle. He also worked for McClellan AFB for over 20 years. He decided to return to college, and at the ripe age of 48, earned his MBA in 1977 from Sacramento State University.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, his three daughters: Debbie Prince (Donnie), Sue Treadwell (Patrick), and Barbara Perez (Robert), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a beloved great-grandson in August 2020. He is missed deeply by his family.
A viewing will be held on November 11, 2020, at East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park, 9189 E Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove, California. In recognition and appreciation for his career in the military, Jim was laid to rest with honor the next day at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Rd, Dixon, California.
