John Wesley Clanton was the son of Newman Haynes Clanton and Mariah Sexton Kelso. He married Nancy Rose Kelsey in Inyo County, California on 14 January 1869. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War as a Private with the 30th Texas Cavalry.
