Jefferson Clinton Arnold's enlistment papers, obtained from the National Archives, states (in his own hand) that he was born in "Vevoy" Michigan. I have been unable to locate such a place on a map, but there is a Vevay Township in Ingham County http://www.vevaytownship.org/ which is likely what is meant. He enlisted at age 19, necessitating the consent of his guardian, Franklin Wardell. Jefferson was taken prisoner during the siege at Petersburg, Va., July 30, 1864 during the Battle of the Crater where Union soldiers became trapped in the huge crater created when their forces destroyed the fortifications surrounding that city. During his three months as prisoner he became very ill, and so was part of a prisoner exchange.
