Sister was born Hester Root, the daughter of Dr. Howard F. Root and Hester King Root. Sister entered the Carmelite Monastery in Williston, VT on August 15, 1952, where she made her profession on February 12, 1954. Sister Maria has been a member of the Beacon monastery since December 1997 when the sisters from the Vermont Carmel joined with the Beacon and Saranac Lake sisters to form a new community in Beacon. Before entering the monastery, Sr. Maria worked as a secretary to Maria VonTrapp of Stowe, Vermont. While with the Trapp Family, she was baptized in the Catholic Church in Morrisville, Vermont, on May 15, 1948. Sister is survived by two brothers, Stephen N. Root, Bloomfield, CT, and Dr. Howard F. Root and his wife, Rhoda, Groton, CT; nephews, Stephen N. Root, Jr., John Howard Root, Paul Root and his wife, Jennifer, and nieces Melissa E. Morse and her husband, Scott, Susan Root, and Martha Bartman and her husband, Todd, and daughter, Tabitha.
