In 1842, when Josiah was 4 years old, the family sold their farm in Indiana to their brother and moved west to Iowa, settling in Linn County as early pioneers.
On April 21, 1859, in Linn County, Iowa, he married his first wife, Margaret A. Phillips, who was born on June 30, 1837 in Green, Pennsylvania. He farmed in both Iowa and Missouri. In his later years he was a rural salesman for nursery stock, traveling by horse and buggy.
Josiah & Margaret had a daughter, Mary E. Brockman, who was born on September 4, 1864 in Iowa. She was married to T. M. Holmes. She died on March 5, 1917 in Laclede, Missouri. Her obituary was published in the "Marion Register."
After Margaret died in 1896, he married his second wife, Agnes Barnhill Markley on February 28, 1902. Agnes was born on September 5, 1834 in Wayne, Ohio. In 1910 he was listed as a "teamster" for a nursery. In 1912 he was a resident of Maitland, Holt County, Missouri. He was a week shy of turning 84 years old when he died on March 29, 1922 in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa.
