Son of Brigadier-General Percy Brown - Derek Brown moved straight from Eton to the Army and was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders in 1944. Posted to the 2nd Battalion in Libya, he saw the tailend of wartime operations, before being attached to the 1st Seaforths in Malaya. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in operations against communist forces in Malaya in 1949.
