Thorton married twice; both times in Hendricks County. On March 30, 1862, he married Hannah Jane Frazee. She died in 1870. On September 15, 1872, he married Olive "Ollie" Wier.

Thornton was the son of James, who was born in 1803 in Kentucky, and Anna Davis, who was born about 1807 also in Kentucky. In 1850, his family included five siblings: Lydia Ann, John H., Willis, Martha and Masy G. They also had a 71-year-old named Henry Miller, native of Pennsylvania, living with them. He was probably Anna's father.

By 1860, Thornton's mother had passed away and the children still living with his father, James, were Thornton, John H., Willis, Martha and Josephine.

In 1870, Thornton only had a hired-hand named William Adams living with him.

By 1880, he had been married to Olive for almost 8 years. They had a son named Charley born in 1874. There were also two boys living with them named Willie, age 17, and Orion, age 11. They are listed as sons.

Olive was still single and living with her parents when Orion was born and she was too young to have been the mother of Willie. So the children are likely Hannah and Thornton's. I couldn't find any record of Orion in 1870, but there was a William H. Davis, age 7 living with Hannah's parents in Smootsdell (now Avon).
