Son of Nathan Bennett and Lydia Hyde. Born at Pawlet, Vermont. His first wife, Jerusha Munro, was the mother of his nine (10?)children.
Founding Father, First Town Assessor & unofficial postmaster of Cheektowaga, NY. Also the first Commissioner of Highways. (As they were then called "path masters", who were overseers of the highways and roads, which were principally dirt paths at this time.) He was an early permanent white settler of the area, emigrating in February 1816 with his new wife Jerusha Munro and her cousin Jesse Monroe and his newlywed wife Harriet Parker. Jesse had previously purchased this land on Feb 1, 1813. (lot #24 sublots B & C)(The town was then called Buffaloe and then later in 1818, Amherst. Cheektowaga annexed from Amherst on March 22. 1839.) They built a double log cabin "on the line" on Batavia Road (now Broadway St.) on the farm that was later purchased by the Christian Ernst Family. (Lot #24-sublot C) Elnathan & Jesse opened their home as a tavern in 1816, that would later be used as a schoolhouse.(School district #4 on Ray Road/School Road) Some years later,Jan 24, 1839 Elnathan purchased sublot C from Jesse and would build another house near the corner of now New Walden Ave. and Harlem Road, which, too, would be open as a tavern and where the Bennet family would continue to live until 1954.
