Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Earl Clark officiated. Visitation was the day of the service from 10 a.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi.

Interment was in Whitehall Methodist Church Cemetery.

Maxine was born April 9, 1943, to Hansel and Rena Box Woods in Webster County, Mississippi. She was a member of Whitehall Methodist Church. She enjoyed painting and music and was an avid sports fan. She also enjoyed working in her flower beds in the yard and in her vegetable garden. Maxine was always gracious to everyone worrying more about her family than about herself. She dearly loved her family especially her grandchildren and was very proud of all their accomplishments. Maxine was a loving friend and was good to check on her friends and help whenever needed. She fought a hard battle with a lot of dignity and grace.

Maxine is survived by her children Kathy Owens and husband Tony of Richland, Mississippi, and Dwight Dempsey and wife June of Starkville, Mississippi. One of her greatest joys was being “Mamaw” to her grandchildren: Zachary Owens, Chloe Owens, Dylan Dempsey, and Dalton Dempsey. Maxine is also survived by her siblings: Levoy Woods, Elnora (Troy) Bright, and Diane (Connie) Dempsey as well as a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband David Dempsey, her daughter Denice Dempsey, her grandson Dylan Dempsey, and her parents.

Serving as pallbearers are Chucky Dempsey, Jason Dempsey, Mark Dempsey, Andy Hartness, John Miles, and Brian Mills. Memorials in honor of Maxine may be given to Dylan Dempsey Memorial Fund, c/o Starkville Academy, 505 Academy Road, Starkville, MS 39759.
