Charlotte Eliza was the only daughter of her mother, Margaret (Peggy) Smith (1765-1821) and her second husband, Hugh Sheridan (1780-1829). Charlotte had seven half siblings from her mother Margaret's first marriage, to Morgan Edwards (1750-1798), and one brother from the second marriage, Samuel Sheridan (1801-1867). Many family trees mistakenly call her Charlotte Edwards, but she was Charlotte Sheridan; see her baptismal record (pictured). Born in 8 March 1804 Covington, St. Tammany Parish, LA, Charlotte was baptized on 22 Feb. 1805 at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.

On Christmas Eve 1830 in Covington, Charlotte married Dr. John Allen Veatch (1808-1870). His work and his passion for science led the family to Texas (and her husband, after her death, further west). Their first two children were born in Louisiana and the others in Texas. They had eight children, two of whom died young: Andrew Allen (1832-1871), Samuel Houston (1833-1904), Lucien (1834-1834), John Alfred (1836-1892), Ada (1839-1892), Kate (1840-1857), Charlotte (Fanny) (1843-after 1880), and James Joseph (1844-after 1866). The last was born the year Charlotte died and she may have died in childbirth.

The family lived in the "Bevil District" of the Republic of Texas, a loose collection of communities on land between the Nueches and Sabine Rivers that was named for John Bevil, who came there in 1829. The area was eventually organized into Jasper and Newton Counties. The republic of Texas censuses for 1835 through 1840 find the Veatch family there. Many of Charlotte's children later led enterprising lives in the West.

Her husband remarried twice after Charlotte's death - in 1848 to Annie Madison Bradley and in 1865 to Samanthe Brisbee - but all the mother of all his children was his first wife, Charlotte.
