Mildred Louise Backlund, 94, formerly of Grand Marais, died on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Menahga, Minn. Mildred L. Boettger was born on Feb. 16, 1908, near Spirit Lake, Iowa. She moved to Grand Marais in 1927 where she began teaching grade school. She was united in marriage to Adolph E. Backlund on Dec. 27, 1932, in Duluth. She lived in Grand Marais the majority of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters. She is survived by her three daughters, Dorothy (Herbert) Glaser of Duluth, Elizabeth (Melvin) Singer of Denver, Colo., and Darleen (Bert) Swanson of Park Rapids, Minn.; four grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and sister Abbie (Ray) Joens of Utah.

SERVICES:Sunday Sept. 15, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist church in Grand Marais. Internment at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais. Cease Funeral Home of Park Rapids, Minn.
