George Andrews was the son of Henry and Lucy Clanton Andrews. He was born in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, Virginia on February 19, 1770. About 1793, George Andrews and his brother Robert relocated from Virginia to Sumter District, South Carolina. There, George Andrews met and married Elizabeth Nind circa 1795. Per the 1810 Census, they had at least 6 sons and 2 daughters. Only the names of 4 of their children are known. As named in his will written in 1842, his surviving children are John, James William, George Russ and Henry Montgomery Andrews.

In 1818, George Andrews moved his family to the wild frontier of Conecuh County, Alabama. It is noted in history books that he was one of the first white settlers in what would later become the town of Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama. About 1820 he opened the first small school in the area. By 1830, George Andrews had acquired land in adjoining Wilcox County and established a plantation there. George Andrews died on July 14, 1846 in Wilcox County, Alabama.
