Parents were George Washington ("Wash" or G.W.) and Rachel B. Coffey Spence. She was born in Blount County, Alabama and moved with her family at about 3 years of age to Denton County, Texas. Her family moved again about 1896-1897 to Falls County, Texas near the community of Durango. The family had a farm about 2 miles north of Durango on Deer Creek. She attended the Union (White Hall) School which was near the still existing Union Cemetery, where her parents are buried. She married John F. Thompson about 1911-12 and they lived in Burnet County, Texas (1930 census) and Bastrop County, Texas (1940 census) before moving to California about 1942. She and John (Johnnie) had one daughter, Velma Alma (Thompson) Watson, born in 1912.
