Howell Henderson Green served the Confederacy in Company I of the 38th Regiment of the North Carolina Troops.

He was a farmer who enlisted on November 21, 1861. The muster roll dated 31 December 1861 states he was a 24 year old farmer who was 5'10" tall and born in Rutherford County, NC. He was mustered in as a Private for one year of service. Sometime during the period 31 January 1862 until 31 March 1862 he spent time in a hospital at Petersburg, VA and was appointed Musician prior to April 1, 1862. Through company records and family letters, we know that Grandpa Howell was wounded on June 26, 1862. By July 1, 1862, he had been reduced to the ranks and was hospitalized at General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond,VA. He was admitted to the hospital on 29 October 1862 with chronic rheumatism and transferred 11 December 1862 to Chimborazo Hospital, also in Richmond as he was suffering from typhoid fever and dysentery. 21 December 1862 he was transferred General Hospital in Farmville, VA, where he was hospitalized until 6 January 1863.

After returning to duty Grandpa Howell was transferred to Wayside or General Hospital No 9 in Richmond, VA, to the office of General Eley where he served as a nurse. Muster rolls for the next couple of months indicate he was on "furlough of indulgence", but was back with the Company by November of 1863. He was present or accounted for until October, 1864 and was captured at the the South Side Railroad, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, sent to City Port, VA, and confined at Hart's Island, New York Harbor, on April 7, 1865. He was released June 19, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

His name appeared on the Register of Prisoners at Hart's Island and a signature to the Oath of Allegiance sworn to 19 June 1865 at Hart's Island. This card probably more closely describes Grandpa Howell as it says he was 5'6-1/2" tall, with a fair complexion, dark hair and dark eyes. The roll of honor also has his age closer to the truth as it says he was 34 at the time he volunteered for service.

Thought he lost his brothers, James Lee and Gilbert, he survived the war, married Malinda "Lindy" Mode, and became the father of Thomas Jefferson, Joseph Caroll, Martin Howell, Louteshia and Oliver Perry "Doc" Green.

My Grandmother, Louteshia's daughter, inherited his musical abilities. Grandma played the piano by ear, my Dad and some of his brothers play any stringed instrument that comes within their reach. What a legacy...
