A J "Ace" Varner, 75, of 1471 Imperial Ave. died Thursday, May 30, 1996, at St. Mary Medical Center.

Born Feb. 25, 1921, in Bronaugh, Mo., to Andrew James and Nettie Viola Reed Varner, he married Carol Mae Teel on June 27, 1942, in Hannibal, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Andrew James of Altona; three daughters, Carol Ann Whittom and Starr Sue Johnson, both of Galesburg, and Janice Kay Lott of Decatur, Texas; one brother, Charles of Oneida; and two sisters, Olivia Busby of Dodge Center, Minn., and Mary Ellen Lee of Hermon. He was preceded in death by one sister.

He was a tool and die maker at the former Gale Products division of Outboard Marine Corp. in Galesburg for 30 years. He then sold real estate and was a mail carrier in Sunrise Beach, Mo. He also worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He retired in 1990. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Post in Sunrise Beach.

Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg.
