Howard was born in Anderson Co, TX to Nathan W. and Bessie Irene Williams Wingate. His father if buried in Holly Springs Cemetery. After the death of his father, his mother married John David Auld, She is buried in Roselawn Park. He died in a Houston hospital. He graduated from Trinity High School and Tyler Commercial College. He entered the Merchant Marines in August 1943 and trained at St. Petersburg, FL. He served in all fighting zones in both theaters.
He was survived by his mother, Bessie Williams Wingate Auld of Palestine; three brothers, J. C. Wingate of Blackfoot, Raymond Wingate of Houston, and J. W. Wingate of New York; three sisters, Mrs. Perry Lee Bankston of Baytown, Mrs. Leroy Keleher of California, and Miss Zelma Wingate of Palestine.
