The Rev. Theodore Irion, pastor emeritus of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Oshkosh, died Thursday at Bethel Home, where he had been a resident for the last three-and-a-half years. He formerly resided at 716 Evans St., Oshkosh. In two weeks he would have reached the age of 100.
He was born in Hamel, Ill., on Sept. 24, 1878, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Jacob Irion. . At an early age he moved to St. Louis where his father had accepted a pastorate.
He graduated from Elmhurst College, Ill., in 1897 and from Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., in 1900, and was the last surviving member of his class. He did postgraduate work at Hartford Theological Seminary in Connecticut. Following ordination, he came directly to Oshkosh in June 1901 to be pastor of the congregation at the corner of Parkway Avenue and Evans Street, then known as St. Paul's Evangelical Church. This was his only pastorate, which he held for 53 years until his retirement.
His wife, the former Hulda Kempien, who he married on June 17, 1908, died in 1962. He is survived by one son, Theodore H. Irion, Oshkosh; and two sisters, Mrs. Otto (Laura) Press, Evansville, Ind., and Mrs. R. (Selma) Schlinkmann, St. Louis, Mo.; and one grandchild.
Services will be held at 2.30 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald Baumann, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, and the Rev. Donald Hinze of Appleton, Northeastern Association minister of the Wisconsin Conference. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Friends may greet the family in the church parlors following the service. Konrad Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established.
