January 24, 1931 - February 13, 2017

U.S. Veteran Wayne Wilbur Whittaker, 86, of Rocky Ford, CO, passed away Monday, February 13th, at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center, La Junta after a sudden medical emergency.

Wayne was born in Denver, CO on January 24, 1931, son of the late Daisy Rebecca (Garkie) and George William Whittaker. He graduated from Rocky Ford High School in 1949, OJC with an Associate Degree in 1951 and the University of Denver with a Bachelor's Degree in Law in 1953.

He was the husband of Mary Alice (Shaum) Whittaker. They were married on May 11, 1957 in Rocky Ford, CO.

Wayne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rocky Ford and served the church in numerous capacities.

Wayne owned/operated the Whittaker Agency, an insurance and real estate agency in Rocky Ford, CO. He also served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Catlin Canal Company from 1961 until the time of his death.

Wayne was a 32nd Degree Mason and Al Kaly Shrine member. He was initiated into the Rocky Ford ELKS Lodge #1147 on Nov. 10, 1953 and was an Exalted Ruler in 1959-1960. He was a former Key Man with the Koshare Indian Dancers. He also served on the Board of the Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District, Rocky Ford Federal Savings and Loan and retired as a Major after serving 22 years with the Colorado National Guard.

He is survived by his wife Mary Alice of the home; Son Gary, husband of Donna Whittaker, of Bremerton, WA; Son Tom, husband of Ann Zerr, of Indianapolis, IN; Daughter Mary Lou, wife of Glenn Shannon, of Las Vegas, NV; Sister Lois, wife of John Schweigert, of Denver, CO.
He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Matthew Whittaker, Zach Whittaker, Daniel Whittaker, Travis Whittaker, Blake Shannon.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers: Bill Whittaker, Bob Whittaker and his wife Peggy; grandson: Bryce Shannon and nephews: John Whittaker and Mark Sweigert.

Memorial Services will be on Saturday, March 11th at 2:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church in Rocky Ford, CO. There will be no viewing as cremation has been effected. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association 2315 Bott Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80904-3727 or First United Methodist Church; 301 Washington, Rocky Ford, CO 81067.
