Merlyn graduated from Calamus High School in 1957 and just weeks later enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the Armed Forces Radio and radar repair, maintaining America's defenses during the Cold War. In 1960, he met and married the future mother of his three sons. They would divorce in 1981. He met and married again in December 1983. His wife survives him. Merlyn was a proud union electrician for more than 30 years, retiring from Kohler Electric of Davenport.
