Son of Michael P Houk and Elizabeth C Wilson; husband to Lydia Layman; During the War of 1812, he served twice. He served the first time for three months, September through December 1813, as a drummer under Captain Simeon Perry and Colonel Samuel Wear. He would name his firstborn son in honor of Captain Simeon Perry. He then served for six months, from 13 November 1814 to 18 May 1815, as a drummer in Captain John Porter's Company, Colonel Edwin E. Booth's Regiment, East Tennessee Militia, under the overall command of Major General William Carroll and General Andrew Jackson, and was present at the Battle of New Orleans, fought 8 January 1815. He had turned 21 years of age the previous December 3rd -- We have this Houk family with Houk/Hawk/Howk/Houch spelling.
