HACKLEY, S. C.
Abilene Man is Killed
Abilene Tex., Nov 15-Shortly before 8 o'clock last night S. C. Hackley, aged 72, was shot three times and killed by his brother in-law, R. Y. Payton, aged 63, following a quarrel between the two men. The shooting occurred in the Hadley home, a local boarding house, where both men lived. The Coroner's verdict was that Hackley came to his death from wounds received from a revolver in the hands of R. Y. Payton.
Both men are pioneer citizens of Abilene and have large families.
When officers arrived on the scene Payton voluntarily surrendered and was lodged in jail.
Three shots were fired, all taking effect.
According to the testimony of County Physician Cash, either of the three shots would have proven fatal. Payton was placed in jail here and will be given an examining trial tomorrow morning before Justice Keeble. (Source: The Lubbock Avalanche November 25 1909.
