Albert E. Apitz, 71, a resident of Atkinson, since 1971, died on Thursday, October 12, 2017, his seventy-first birthday, with his loving family by his side.
Born, raised and educated in Haverhill, MA, son of the late Albert C. and Dora (LaValley) Apitz, he was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1964 and later received his Associates Degree in Business Management from Northern Essex Community College.
A U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, Mr. Apitz served as an Interior Communications Electrician 2nd Class and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.
Following his honorable discharge from the service, Mr. Apitz went to work as a cable splicer and later and installer and repairman for New England Telephone, Nynex, Bell Atlantic and finally Verizon, from where he retired.
A forty-seven year member of the Atkinson Volunteer Fire Department, he also served as a Deputy Fire Warden for Rockingham County, and was still working as a bus driver for the Timberlane Regional School District.
Mr. Apitz was a member of the Carl David Post #34 of the American Legion, The Plaistow Fish and Game Club, and the Rockingham County State Fire Warden’s Association. A fan of all Boston and New England sports teams, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking care of his yard and vegetable, herb and flower gardens.
He was predeceased by his brother Donald Apitz.
Relatives and friends are invited to Mr. Apitz’s Life Celebration to be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral will take place on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 10a.m. in the funeral home followed by a committal service with Full Fire Department Honors and U.S. Navy Military Honors in the Atkinson Cemetery.
