Obituary
Many friends, relatives, town citizens and prominent town officials attended the funeral services
held last Sunday afternoon at the home on Warren avenue for Carrold D. Howland, one of the
best known and active residents of the town, who died last Friday at his home.
Mr. Howland, who was in his 72nd year, was born in the Chiltonville section of Plymouth, a son
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howland and had lived in Plymouth during his entire life.
Rev. John McGee, pastor of the Chiltonville Congregational church officiated at the funeral
service and paid tribute to Mr. Howland with lines from Abraham Lincoln, "I like to see a man
proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him."
Mr. Howland formerly a contractor and builder up to the time of his retirement, was intensely
interested in all civic and historical events and was an ardent student of local history.
He was a director of the Pilgrim Society of Plymouth and the New England Cranberry Sales Co.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge A. F. and A. M. and the Samoset Chapter of Plymouth.
Of his more recent accomplishments of prominence was his time and attention given to the
organization of the Plymouth Civilian Defense of which group he was (cannot read rest of sentence)
He is survived by his wife, Lucy P. (Hadaway) Howland and two daughters, Mrs. John F. Chapman
of New York and Mrs. William J. Keller of Wilmington, Delaware. There are also two grandsons,
Howland and Wayne Keller. Ashton L. Howland of Plymouth and Mrs. Joseph Morse of Brockton
are a brother and sister who also survive him.
