Obituary:
"Margaret "Grandma" Wessa, of Columbus, passed away on December 25, 2006 at Lutheran Village, she was 101. She was born Margaret Mary Schaaf in Pomeroy, OH, the daughter of the late John U Schaaf and Margaret Hess Schaaf. She is survived by her son John Wessa and many grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren; too numerous to name. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Milton Edison Wessa, a son Milton Jr., a daughter Eleanore Wessa Moore and two children who died in infancy. Being 101, Margaret outlived all of her family peers including her sisters, Mary Schaaf and Katherine Schaaf Bachner, and brother George Schaaf. Margaret met Milton Wessa in Pomeroy, OH, where they married and started their family. Margaret worked all of her life and in the late 1940's, she and Milton moved their family to Columbus and found jobs in the area. She worked as a waitress at the Biltmore Restaurant on W. Broad Street and also as the office manager of a local physician. Margaret was a wonderful cook and she used those skills to start a catering business in the early 1960's. She catered private parties and reception for clients throughout the Columbus area into her 90's. She was devoted to her church, St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and volunteered many hours there organizing and cooking in the kitchen for church functions. She was active in Lutheran Social Service and in 1995 was recognized for her many years of volunteer service there. She also found time to volunteer as a poll worker in precinct in every election for 50 years. As expected, she voted in the last election in November. In addition to work and church, Margaret and Edison were avid gardeners and Margaret canned and preserved much of what they grew. However, nothing brought her more joy than cooking dinner for her extended family. Margaret was a loving mother and grandmother to her family and to the many friends, she made over the years. Through the way, she lived her life, she taught her family many things including faith in God, finding strength in adversity, the importance of family and hard work and the joy of giving to others. She will be dearly missed."
