Karen Louise Heilmeier Rankin, 82, passed away July 18, 2018 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C. A native of Akron, Ohio, Karen was the daughter of Catherine Elizabeth Klein Heilmeier and James Henry Heilmeier. Following high school, Karen earned a nursing degree from Akron City Hospital and followed that by attending Wittenberg University to complete her BSN. At age 50, Karen completed the master's program in nursing at the University of Alabama-Birmingham where she obtained an MSN in Psychiatric Nursing. While her nursing career began in 1956 on the hospital floors, Karen's true calling became evident when she joined the teaching faculty at West Georgia University. During this time, Karen mentored many - both new, young students as well as those pursuing a change in career. The wisdom Karen imparted to her family and friends, her colleagues and students, was the perfect blend of many qualities: strength, kindness, compassion, empathy, intelligence, intuition, and selflessness. It was an honor to know and love her and, most especially, to be on the receiving end of her gift for connecting with people in a genuine, generous, and caring manner.

In addition to her parents; Karen was preceded in death by her devoted husband, H. Allan Rankin, MD, and beloved daughter, Laura Catherine Rankin.
