As a Professor of Surgery he was Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and of Vascular Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and an adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda. He retired from the university in 2009 at age 83.
Throughout his 50-plus years of service to the university, although patients were his priority, he considered his greatest accomplishment to be that of helping to train many outstanding cardiac and vascular surgeons here in Rochester and throughout the country, and he attributed much of his success to the mentorship he received from Dr. Earle Mahoney; and to the collaboration of all those he worked with: Dr. Sy Schwartz, Dr. Jim Adams, Dr. Charles Rob, and especially Dr. Jeff Hicks, who has been like a son to him. Golf played a major role in Jim's life. He was a member of Oak Hill Country Club for more than 50 years, and he was thrilled to become a Masters Golf Tournament patron, traveling to Augusta each April. As a visiting professor at the medical center there, he also got to play Augusta National golf course one year, thanks to life-long friends, Dr. Bob and Mary Gail Nesbit.
Jim and Pat shared a wonderful life together. She was his devoted partner, loving caretaker and steadfast supporter for more than 51 years. He was loved and respected by his children and grandchildren for the life lessons they learned from him, and for the fun family gatherings each year on Canandaigua Lake. He was so proud of each one of them. He will be dearly missed.
