Penfield: Died on November 14, 2013, at the age of 88. Survived by his wife, Pat, children Jim (Elsie), Meg (Pierre), Beth (Eric), Joanne (Fran), Bob (Maura), and Jamie (John), and grandchildren Cristina, Stephanie, James, Remy, Tim, Molly, Cameron, Maya, Otis, and Jonathan.

Academician, surgeon, researcher, clinician, teacher, politician, mentor, golfer, world traveler, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Always a true gentleman. Born April 5, 1925, in Kent, Ohio, Dr. DeWeese attended Harvard University, Kent State University, and the University of Rochester Medical School (AOA), and served in the United States Army at Carlisle Barracks and in Germany. He was one of the pioneers in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, serving as president of national and international surgical organizations, including the Society for Vascular Surgery, American Venous Forum, Eastern Vascular Surgical Society, Upstate New York Vascular Society, Pan Pacific Surgical Association, North American Chapter of the International Society for Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, International Society for Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, and the Senior Cardiovascular Society. He served on the national boards of the American Heart Association, American Board of Surgery, Thoracic Board of Surgery, and four editorial boards; and was on the Advisory Council on Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery for the American College of Surgeons, the Cardiac Advisory Committee to the New York State Department of Health, and on the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Board of Trustees at Clifton Springs Hospital, and the Blue Shield Board of Directors. He was awarded the distinguished service awards of the American Heart Association and the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Roswell Park Medal. There is a lectureship in his honor yearly at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

He was an honorary member of the University of Michigan Coller Surgical Society, the Dallas Texas Jesse Thomas Vascular Society, East Carolina Vascular Society, Gulf Coast Vascular Society, Southern Surgical Association, Southern Association of Vascular Surgeons, Brazilian Society of Angiology, and the Royal Australian College of Surgeons; and provided over one hundred lectureships and professorships around the country. He cared for thousands of patients, and published numerous papers, abstracts, and book chapters throughout his career.

As a Professor of Surgery he was Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and of Vascular Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and an adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda. He retired from the university in 2009 at age 83.

Throughout his 50-plus years of service to the university, although patients were his priority, he considered his greatest accomplishment to be that of helping to train many outstanding cardiac and vascular surgeons here in Rochester and throughout the country, and he attributed much of his success to the mentorship he received from Dr. Earle Mahoney; and to the collaboration of all those he worked with: Dr. Sy Schwartz, Dr. Jim Adams, Dr. Charles Rob, and especially Dr. Jeff Hicks, who has been like a son to him. Golf played a major role in Jim's life. He was a member of Oak Hill Country Club for more than 50 years, and he was thrilled to become a Masters Golf Tournament patron, traveling to Augusta each April. As a visiting professor at the medical center there, he also got to play Augusta National golf course one year, thanks to life-long friends, Dr. Bob and Mary Gail Nesbit.

Jim and Pat shared a wonderful life together. She was his devoted partner, loving caretaker and steadfast supporter for more than 51 years. He was loved and respected by his children and grandchildren for the life lessons they learned from him, and for the fun family gatherings each year on Canandaigua Lake. He was so proud of each one of them. He will be dearly missed.

Pat and family are thankful for dear friends, Jeff and Sue Hicks, Bob and Lee Caldwell, Joe and Mary Flatley, Jim and Jacquie Adams, and others who helped to make Jim's later years with dementia more livable and meaningful for him; for Dr. Bob Kerper, and other physicians for their diligent medical care; for Sue Hutchings, Kathy LeVeque, and Sue Edwards for their devotion and support at the Medical Center; for our loving caregivers Viola, Fatima, Van; for our caring family at the Rochester Presbyterian Home; for the compassionate support of the staff at the University of Rochester Medical Center Palliative Care Center, and for wonderful neighbors at Allen's Creek Valley who raised our spirits through trying times.

Friends may call Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral chapel (2305 Monroe Ave.) and all are invited to a Celebration of Life and reception in honor of Dr. DeWeese at Oak Hill Country Club on Tuesday at 11 AM.

Private interment at the Academy Cemetery, Seneca Point, Canandaigua Lake. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations to the James A. DeWeese Endowment Fund at the University of Rochester Medical Center; or the URMC Division of Cardiac Surgery c/o Dr. George Hicks; or the Rochester Presbyterian Home.
