Samuel Taylor Coleridge married Sarah Fricker, in St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol in 1795. He grew to detest his wife, whom he married mainly because of social constraints. He and Sara (he changed the spelling of her name) finally separated in 1808. Sara was forced to move in with her sister and brother-in-law, the poet Robert Southey, an arrangement which endured for 29 years. She finally achieved some degree of independence, living first with her son Derwent when he took orders, then permanently with her daughter Sara, after she delivered her first child in 1820.

Inscription

Beneath this stone lies the body of
SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE
Born 21 October 1772. Died 25 July 1834
Stop, Christian passer-by!—Stop, child of God,
And read with gentle breast.
Beneath this sod A poet lies, or that which once seemed he.
O, lift one thought in prayer for S. T. C.;
That he who many a year with toil of breath
Found death in life, may here find life in death!
Mercy for praise—to be forgiven for fame
He asked, and hoped, through Christ.
Do thou the same!
Also SARAH the wife of the above.
who died 24 September 1845.
Also their nephew & son in law HENRY NELSON COLERIDGE
who died 26 January 1843
and his wife SARA who died 3 May 1852
and HERBERT COLERIDGE the son of the two last,
who died 23 April 1861.
These bodies were removed from the Old Graveyard Highgate
and reburied here 6 June 1961.
