I believe Earl is the adopted child of Harvey and Leona Yaw. I do not know whether the adoption was formal since he continued to use his birth surname. Please see below for information that was found on ancestry.com about the Yaw family.
From the 1940 US census, the household in Ischua, NY consisted of:

Leona Yaw 42
Paul Yaw 18
Virginia Yaw 17

Minnie J Brooks 7

(The four youngest children are listed as boarders in the census records. From ancestry.com: marypoe1951 says: earl, Ida and minnie were adopted by the Yaw family...I found them 2011...Randy Bruyere...they are the children of Clara Bell Bruyer, daughter of Charles Bruyer, my great uncle who was born 1878 in Pa., and son of Alexander Bruyere from Canada born 1848)
