John was the son of Justus and Rachel (Corbly) Garard, born at Garard's Fort in Greene Co, PA and was only 5 years old when the home of his Corbly grandparents was attacked. His birth date is based on his age at death inscribed on his tombstone--52y 2m 21 d. (b. 20 March 1777) when he died on 10 June 1835. He and his wife are buried in the Kirby Cemetery, Warren Co, Ohio. He married Mary Kirby on 20 Feb 1806 in Warren Co., Ohio (Warren Co. Marriage Records.) She was the daughter of Joseph Kirby and Sarah Carter, b. 30 May, 1788; d. 18 Oct. 1855.

"John, a farmer, died intestate and his sons Justus and Harvey were appointed administrators, 20 July 1835, Warren Co. Probate Records, Box 67, File 1. On 14 Sept 1835, Mary was appointed guardian for the five youngest children. John and Mary signed a Quit Claim deed on the land of his deceased father 25 Apr 1833, Green Co., PA Deed Bk, 689....John served in the War of 1812 (9 Aug 1813 to 8 Feb 1814) as a a Corp. on the roll of Capt Joseph Ewing's Company."
