She was the oldest of two daughters born to F. E. and Clara, but they also had an older adopted son; Ralph Gillespie Huston. After the death of her mother in 1916 when Gladys was only 9 years old, Gladys' father married Willa Gee (Fisher) Miller (1871-1958) and the family (excluding Ralph) moved to Long Beach, California. Glady's father was killed when a garage collapsed wall on him in 1928.
