In the 1865 Kansas State Census, Carrie and her mother Maria were boarding with George and Annette Bodine in Ft. Scott, Bourbon County. The census reported that Maria was born in Ohio and was 25 years old, and Carrie was three.
The 1870 U.S. Census showed Carrie and her mother living in Belleville, Howard County, Nevada, with Maria's second husband, a farmer by the name of G. C. Hinkley. Mr. Hinkley was born in New York and was 44 at the time of the census. Maria was 27, and Carrie was seven. Carrie's surname in the census was still Wilkins.
Carrie's mother married a third time, to Hank Brophy in 1880. Maria and Hank stayed in Belleville. Maria later moved to Kingston, New Mexico, where she ran the Occidental Hotel. Carrie lived with her and sang in the Episcopal Church Choir and at the Kingston Opera House.
It was in Kingston that Carrie met her future husband, Edward L. Doheny Sr. Carrie and Edward were married on August 7, 1883, in Silver City, New Mexico, and their first child, Eileen, was born the following year. Their son Edward Jr., nicknamed Ned, was born nine years later in Los Angeles. Eileen died of heart disease in Los Angeles when she was just eight years old.
The couple separated in April 1899, when Carrie left their Los Angeles home and moved to the Bay Area. Edward re-married.
Carrie died September 27, 1900 at her home in Oakland. Her companion reported that Carrie had ordered some medications and some battery fluid for the house, and took the battery fluid instead of her medications. The coroner determined that her death was accidental.
Carrie was originally interred at Evergreen Cemetery, but after Ned's death, Edward Sr. had her remains, and those of their daughter Eileen, disinterred and placed with Ned.
