Joseph Billington was born Feb 2nd, 1636/37 at Plymouth, Massachusetts, a son of Francis Billington (of the Mayflower) and his wife Christian Penn (Eaton). The family was not well-off financially, causing the need to have their children "bound out" or apprenticed to labor for others in the colony. On January 1642/43 young Joseph was bound out at the age of just 6 years old. Plymouth town records relate that he often ran off from his master to return to his family. Since he was too young to be punished, the Court tried a preventative measure with his parents, Francis and Christian. The records state that "if either the said Francis or Christian, his wyfe, do receive him, if he shall againe depart from his said master without his lycence, the said Francis and Christian, his wyfe shall be sett in the stocks...as often as he or shee shall so receive him".
When he became of age, Joseph Billington moved from Plymouth to New Shoreham, Block Island, Rhode Island where he married Grace (Phillips?) on 16 September 1672. They had at least 3 children: Mary in 1674, Francis in 1676, and Elisha abt 1680. I believe the mother Grace may have died in October of 1680.
The last record found for Joseph on Block Island was 7 Jan 1684/5 when he petitioned for and was granted the seven-year lease of a small piece of land to build a house. He died sometime after that, before 1692. I am assuming he and his wife Grace must be buried at Block Island, but not sure which cemetery. I have included his memorial here since this is one of the oldest cemeteries on the island.
