Theodore (Ted) Allen, Jr. passed away from natural causes on August 29, 2020 in Fort Worth, just a few days before his 92nd birthday. Ted was born in Wichita Falls in 1928 and grew up in Gustine, near Comanche. After a stint in the US Army he received a degree in Journalism from Texas Christian University. After graduation from TCU he landed his first professional position as Sports Editor at the Kilgore News-Herald. At the News-Herald he also met his future wife, Joan Dalrymple. They married in 1954 and spent 61 loving years together until her passing in 2015. In 1966 Ted moved his family from Kilgore to Duncanville after being selected for a layout editor position at the Dallas Morning News. He became a 53-year resident of Duncanville. He also moonlighted as a sportswriter for the local newspaper, the Suburban, during this time, covering all the high school’s sports activities. He retired from the News in 1998 after a 32-year career, continuing on at the Suburban for many more years until it ceased publishing. In retirement Ted enjoyed a variety of activities such as working crossword, jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles and spending time with his family. Ted was pre-deceased by his wife, Joan; his brother, Dale Allen; and his sister, Sue Allen Petrecca. He is survived by his daughters Suzanne Tuttle (Steve) of Fort Worth; Barbara Varley (Brian) of Fort Worth; and Rebecca Garza (Gus) of Duncanville. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jerry Dalrymple Kelly, of Akron OH. In addition Ted leaves a legacy of six grandchildren (Bobby O’Banion, Erin Varley, Caitlin Varley, Ian Varley, Brianna Garza and Theo Garza), two great-grandsons (Allah Flores and Aiki Flores) and three nieces (Laurie Allen, Lianne Allen Busbee and Teresa Kelly Pastor). At this time no memorial gathering is planned. Ted will be cremated and his ashes interred with Joan at the Kilgore City Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
