Richmond Pearson Wood was born in Limestone, Washington County, Tennessee, the son of John Wood and his second wife, Lucretia. He was named in honor of Colonel Richmond Pearson, of North Carolina.

Richmond Wood was married on July 15, 1847 in Washington County, Tennessee to Mary Collins. His wife died not long after their marriage and seeking to escape his grief he journeyed to California in the gold rush of 1849. He did not actively participate in the search for gold, but as a blacksmith was able to secure a comfortable living for himself with the influx of men searching for gold and the resulting need for repairing broken equipment, et cetera.

Richmond Wood is enumerated in the 1852 California state census residing in Sacramento, identified as 25 years of age, born in Tennessee, and a blacksmith. He is enumerated in the 1860 federal census as Richmond Woods [sic] on 9 Aug 1860 residing in Sacramento, California (fourth ward), identified as 35 years of age, born in Tennessee, and a blacksmith by occupation, his personal estate valued at $1,200 (equal to $37,460.39 in 2020).

He is last found in public records in the Sacramento County, California Voter Registration records for 1892, registering on September 22, 1892. He is listed as Richmond Wood; 60 years of age; 5 feet, 11.5 inches in height; medium complexion; light blue eyes; and with gray hair. His place of residence was given as "N.E. cor 7 & S."
