In 1850 he was living with his parents at Newark, Licking County, Ohio. His first marriage was to Angeline Fort in Henderson County, Illinois in 1861. They had two known sons, James W. and Charles Frederick. Charles and Angeline were apparently divorced.

His second marriage was to Mrs. Adelia Smith in Cedar County, Iowa on 29 Sep 1900.
