Pastor at First Assembly∼Dr. Charles T. Crabtree passed peacefully into his eternal reward with his wife and family by his side in the early morning of August 23, 2020, in Roseville, California. Before his passing, Charles' children and grandchildren enjoyed several days together where he prayed for each of them. Hours before his passing, Ramona, his loving wife of 61 years, played his favorite hymns on the piano and ushered him into the presence of the Lord. He will be remembered for his powerfully anointed preaching, his sterling character, and his unforgettable sense of humor.
Charles was born on October 20, 1937, to Rev. Clifford and Helen Crabtree in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and then raised in Bangor, Maine. After graduating from high school, he attended Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, where he received theological training and met his wife, Ramona Hudgins, who was attending Evangel College in Springfield. The two were married on November 1, 1958, and served as associate pastors and traveling evangelists. They later served as lead pastors of First Assembly of God, Des Moines, Iowa (1963-1974) and Bethel Church, San Jose, California (1974-1988). In addition, Charles was the National Director for the Assemblies of God's Decade of Harvest (1988-1993), Assistant General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God (1993-2007), and President of Northpoint Bible College (2007-2013) prior to his retirement in 2013. He and Ramona, who is an accomplished pianist, traveled extensively around the world speaking and authoring eight books on subjects in theology, pastoral ministry, church development and discipleship. During his retirement years, Charles enjoyed preaching, writing, traveling, playing games with Ramona, and spending time with his family. His latest book, a commentary on the Book of Jude, is entitled Soul Care and will be released in the coming months.
He is survived by his wife, Ramona; their three daughters: Renee Byerley of Nashville, TN; Rachel (Bob) Silva of Roseville, California; and Rhonda (Gene) Roncone of Aurora, Colorado; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way; and a sister, Charlotte Carlson of Redding, California. He was preceded in death by his brother, David Crabtree; sister, Hazel Hoskins; and a grandson, Geno Roncone, who passed away at age 23 in 2016 due to cancer.
